Project details

Are you motivated to volunteer for women’s empowerment in Kerala, India? Through the Women’s Empowerment project of International Volunteer HQ, volunteers can provide free classes to local women who typically lead very traditional lives. Volunteers can help women learn about contemporary social concerns and teach English while gaining teaching experience. This can give them the self-assurance they need to get employment and live more autonomous lives free from gender-based discrimination.

What to expect and how you’ll make an impact

In India, the idea of women’s empowerment is still relatively new, and many women lead very traditional lives. Volunteers can help teach English and educate local women to modern social issues by helping to provide free classes for them. This will help them become more independent, confident, and improve their prospects of landing a job.

English-speaking women in India have a significantly higher employment rate. Lessons, however, are frequently costly and unavailable. An alternative is offered by Women’s Empowerment volunteers, who teach small classes to women ranging in age from 20 to over 70.

Volunteers should have reasonable expectations about their abilities because the situation regarding women’s equality in India differs greatly from that in other countries. Speaking conversational English while discussing current issues is the primary goal.

Volunteering for women’s empowerment can take many forms, but typically entails:

  • Teaching women and girls English
  • Talking on current issues
  • Basic instruction in personal care and health
  • Women’s upskilling via workshops and activities

In addition to teaching English, the local team has begun adding more skill-building activities for the women in the area. As a result, volunteers can assist with embroidered skill-building classes that are led by a local needlework expert. In order to boost the number of women attending these sessions, volunteers will assist with paperwork, class support, the creation of additional activities, certificate creation, photo snapping, and social media post creation.

A computer session has also been added, utilizing computers that were generously provided by prior volunteers. Volunteers will design sessions for the ladies based on a textbook on basic computer skills and be available to help them improve their computer skills.

Volunteers are asked to prepare their courses in advance, and please be advised that you will primarily be teaching alone or in tandem with another volunteer. The volunteers are ultimately in charge of class planning and instruction, but the local team will assist you with it, offer suggestions for lesson subjects, and offer ideas for innovative teaching methods. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged that volunteers bring lesson plans and activities they would want to use in their classes.
