Energy Earthshots Initiative

The climate crisis demands immediate and decisive action through our Energy Earthshots™ initiative. This bold program is designed to fast-track breakthroughs in creating abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions within the next decade. We will confront the climate crisis head-on, achieve our 2050 net-zero carbon goals, and generate thousands of new jobs in the robust clean energy economy we are building.

Energy Earthshots specifically target the most significant technical challenges that still hinder our energy system. Developed by the Department of Energy (DOE), this initiative sets clear technical and cost goals for next-generation clean energy technologies, propelling research, development, and demonstrations of effective clean energy solutions by 2035.

Building on the phenomenal success of DOE’s SunShot initiative, which successfully decreased the cost of solar energy by 75% ahead of schedule, the Energy Earthshots program was born from the urgent need highlighted by President Biden upon taking office. We are focusing on eight critical areas: hydrogen, carbon dioxide removal, long-duration energy storage, floating offshore wind, enhanced geothermal, industrial heat, clean fuels and products, and affordable home energy.

This comprehensive approach is designed to tackle climate change while championing American innovation and creating thousands of high-quality jobs. Energy Earthshots signify our unwavering commitment to collaborative research and development (R&D) that drives the energy transition. We are expanding the array of solutions available to communities, empowering them with diverse technologies and choices.

Once our targets are met, we will catalyze the private sector to launch new clean energy industries, lower energy costs for families nationwide, and eliminate hundreds of millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Earthshots initiative is focused on integrated program development across DOE’s Office of Science and its applied energy offices, tackling the toughest technological challenges and driving down costs for our most promising next-generation clean energy technologies.

Each goal within the Energy Earthshots initiative is grounded in rigorous analysis. We are actively identifying the most formidable barriers to research, development, and deployment that stand in the way of getting next-generation technologies to market. By setting ambitious yet achievable goals, Energy Earthshots represent the fearless innovations necessary for a successful clean energy transition. Achieving these goals will fundamentally improve lives, transforming homes, environments, and livelihoods for the better.
